Week 7

Hydrogel Creation: Varying Calcium Carbonate Concentration

Based on observations of the preliminary hydrogel sample, four concentrations of calcium carbonate were chosen to compare tensile properties and choose a concentration to use for the final prototype. The concentrations desired were 6, 7, 8, and 9 g/L.

Calculations

Ibuprofen

One dosage of ibuprofen is 400mg. This is the amount of ibuprofen we would like to be contained in a 6cm by 5cm patch.

400mg = 0.4g

(0.4g/0.003(m^2)) = (xg/0.00636(m^2))
(0.4g)(0.00636(m^2)) = (0.003(m^2))(xg)
x = 0.8482g ibuprofen

GDL

80 mM GDL overall = 0.08 M = (#moles)/(0.022L)
0.00176mol GDP x 178.14g/mol = 0.3135g GDL

Sodium Alginate

12 mL 1% alginate aqueous solution

Calcium Carbonate

6g/L x 0.006L = 0.036g per 6mL
7g/L x 0.006L = 0.042g per 6mL
8g/L x 0.006L = 0.048g per 6mL
9g/L x 0.006L = 0.054g per 6mL
